January 20, 2009 – It Still Seems so Far Away it is Hard to Keep Thinking About Tomorrow

by Steven Leser

So, I'm playing with my new Myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/sleser trying to add interesting things, philosophers, Democratic & Progressive politicians, etc. and then it strikes me. Eureka! I searched for and found the video of the 1993 Clinton inaugural ball where Fleetwood Mac plays "Don't Stop " and the whole Clinton clan is up on the stage. I added it to my page.

I watched it a few times and became overcome with a profound sense of loss. I remember that day. I remember how the country looked at that new President and administration and indeed the nation and their whole lives with so much hope and so much optimism. I remember how well the country did under that administration. We all were so accustomed to the country doing well that I don't think any of us anticipated we could fall to where we now find ourselves.

When is January 20, 2009 going to get here? It is taking its sweet time isn't it? Can't we all agree to forget about the fact that Bill Clinton already served two terms, have Bush and Cheney leave and just put Clinton and Gore back? The economy was good, we weren't mired in a failing and criminal war in Iraq, and we had a surplus and not a federal deficit. Most people in most other countries liked us and our country. It is amazing how one thoughtless administration can change all of that.

This and more I thought as I watched Fleetwood Mac belt out their tune. Where has that America gone? We have lost something, I am sure of it. Maybe it is our national soul. We have sold our national soul to pre-emptive, falsely justified war, bloated deficits and class war against the poor and middle class for the benefit of the rich and the petroleum companies.

We need to elect a Democratic President. We need to have a Democrat take office January 20, 2009 and restore the good name of this country, to restore the economy of this country. No Republican can or will do this. Whatever they say, whatever they claim they will do, another Republican would mean more failure, more hubris, and further crushing of the American spirit.

My fellow Americans, hear me. There are two popular Republicans who will probably run for President. Both will say all sorts of wonderful sounding things. No matter who gets the Republican nomination, do not believe them and do not vote for them. Our Democratic congress is going to do its best to get the country moving back in the right direction, but to finish the job we will need a Democratic President. We can regain the good times of the Clinton-Gore years, but not with a Republican administration. Keep thinking January 20, 2009, keep thinking Democratic President and Don't stop thinking about tomorrow!

1. Don't stop believing
All things are transitory, even this pack of animals. It might take the change in Congress, a general election or even a full-blown insurrection but someday soon, they will be gone.
