Planet's splendor revealed for Earth Day

A December 1968 image taken during the Apollo 8 mission shows Earth. "We came all this way to explore the moon," said Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, "and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth."

Some of the photos Anders took were used on posters and pins on the first Earth Day in 1970. As people celebrate the wonder of nature on this year's Earth Day, April 22, space travelers recall their impressions of Earth from above.

1. Very awe-inspiring. It would be nice if our descendents could be around to enjoy it.

The Amazon rain forest will be desert by 2100. Oh gawd, what have we done. I hate to think of the starvation on this planet in 50+ yrs.
