Boston City Council Backs Employee Free Choice

by James Parks, May 1, 2007

The Boston City Council on April 25 unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the Employee Free Choice Act, a move championed by the Greater Boston Labor Council.

Says Rich Rogers, executive secretary-treasurer of the labor council:

We are proud to be a union city and we thank the Boston City Council for reinforcing the need to restore a level playing field for workers seeking a voice at work.

Donna Shaw of the United Steelworkers, Gerry Leary (center) of the Electrical Workers and Steve Sullivan of the unaffiliated Teamsters testify at the Boston City Council hearing on the Employee Free Choice Act.

The resolution reads in part:

The Boston City Council supports the Employee Free Choice Act, which would authorize the National Labor Relations Board to certify a union as the bargaining representative when a majority of employees voluntarily sign authorizations designating that union to represent them; provide for first contract mediation and arbitration; and establish meaningful penalties for violations of a worker’s freedom to choose a union.
