How did we get here?-Give yourself a pat on the back. |

Regardless of what the latest conventional wisdom is in DC (as dutifully reported by Andrea Koppel this morning) the message has been sent out and well received-End the war now.
The American people appear to see the machinery for what it is and no amount of group think in DC seems to be working.
When talk of adding time lines on to the emergency spending bill was first brought up talking head experts couldn't wait to get on the TV to tell us how bad an idea it was and how it would never pass and even if it did PRESIDENT Bush would veto it anyway so there was no need to even do it. If this sounds like pre-emptive sour grapes it should.
Then it was written in and then it was passed.
HUGE victory for Pelosi-she showed that she could actually bring all these sides together.
Then all talking head experts couldn't wait to get on the TV to tell us how bad an idea it was and how it would never pass and even if it did PRESIDENT Bush would veto it anyway so there was no need to even do it and how this would never get through the Senate. If this sounds like pre-emptive sour grapes it should.
It did. Reid, like Pelosi, was given little credit. Seems Bush shadow loomed large.
Then all talking head experts couldn't wait to get on the TV to tell us how bad an idea it was and how THE FINAL BILL would never pass and even if it did PRESIDENT Bush would veto it anyway so there was no need to even do it. If this sounds like pre-emptive sour grapes it should.
Then it did. An even BIGGER win for Pelosi and Reid.
and now it is vetoed.
But HOW DID WE GET HERE?
As E.J.Dionne pointed out in a column a few months ago the Democrats were timid about even making the war an issue in the '06 election but thanks to you and me and all the grassrooters out there we told them to. They did and we all know what happened. Basically the catalyst for all of this goes back to Ned Lamont getting the Democratic nomination in that bastion of wild radicals Connecticut. The message was sent loud and clear-ENOUGH.
Also the Democratic leadership was not too crazy about forcing W's hand into only his second veto. Again letters, emails, calls etc. flowed in and they were forced to defy what all the well credentialed professional advisors had been telling them.
NOW WHERE DO WE GO?
Well it is impossible to predict the future (ask all the people who told us how sure they were about how things would be in Iraq-use any 6 months time period you like) but I can't imagine that Bush being aligned with anything going over well, from now until the end of time.
Also keep an eye out because in yet another 6 months the DC machinery is going to come out and tell us how we all sooooo supported the President and how we all sooooo greatly wanted to support the troops and etc.
They are going to try to rewrite history-they already have by failing to acknowledge how we got here. All of them.

1. There's Only One Place To Go: Forward, Into Impeachment and Conviction |

And there's tremendous resistance to that, still. But We the People are getting mighty hot under the collar, and vocal. We must insist on Congress doing its Constitutional duty!
