The Twilight of the Gods Zone

Right about now, George W. Bush must feel like an eponymous character in a Twilight Zone episode. After having slumbered fitfully in a foreign relations coma that began with him a conquering hero on the deck of an aircraft carrier, he awakes to a different world in which he’s reviled and his once-loyal underlings are mutinying against him.

And the issue isn’t the Democrats or Bush stranding the troops without funding. We’ve known for months that the Pentagon has enough discretionary funds and the power of discretionary spending to finance both wars clear into July. To imply that the Department of Defense lives hand to mouth like 50% of this country is as ludicrous as it is fallacious.

The issue is using the troops as a pawn in a constitutional power struggle when the stakes are plainly mortal. Congress can’t bring the troops home without the say of the executive branch and, in spite of all the powers that Bush has usurped for himself since he began his unwelcome residency in the White House, he has yet to be able to find a way to legally spend any taxpayer money without the approval of the legislative branch. And, like Nancy Pelosi had said recently, there’s a new Congress in town.

It would be easy to draw an analogy of Bush as baby crying uncontrollably when the war funding tit ran dry but here’s a better one:

Let’s call this Twilight Zone episode, “Twilight Zone of the Gods.” Enter the late Rod Serling, trademark cigarette producing a tendril of smoke with Rod beginning,

“Submitted for your disapproval: A sad, ludicrous little man completely unfit to wield the enormous power he has, voted for by people unfit to vote and voted in by a judicial body unfit to judge.

And this sad, ludicrous little man has painted with blood himself and 160,000 other people into a corner from which there is no escape. And this man refuses to see the danger even when the tide of blood begins to lap at his ankles.
