Bush, Once Party-Builder, Leaves Republicans Weakened, Worried
Bush, Once Party-Builder, Leaves Republicans Weakened, Worried

By Catherine Dodge and Laura Litvan

May 15 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Tom Davis, a veteran Republican campaign strategist, sees one bright spot for his party's prospects in 2008: President George W. Bush's term will be drawing to a close.

Many Republicans blame Bush's pursuit of the Iraq war for putting them in the minority in 2006 and fear further losses in 2008. Increasingly, they're looking past Bush at a perilous future.

``The face of the Republican Party changes in about 12 months,'' said Davis, a Northern Virginia lawmaker who formerly headed the National Republican Congressional Committee. ``There's no question that the president at this point has dragged our brand name down.''

Davis was part of a group of 11 Republican House members who met with Bush and senior administration officials May 8 to deliver a blunt message: rank-and-file support for the war is fading amid growing concern that the party's embrace of Bush policies may imperil its future.

1. Much too late for damage control
The Republicon rank and file should have known the difference between right and wrong before they were caught.

2. Watch how those 11 vote on the occupation before you believe
that they're deserting the Bush/Cheney/Rove ship.

5. in 2000, Repukes essentially ran against Bill Clinton
not really on their records (and the lost ground!).

Problem was, under Clinton, things were generally good ... so good, that Bush was promising to spend the projected surplus by cutting taxes to the top 1 percent. (Ironically, or maybe not, when the economy went south, he promised to fix the problem by proposing the exact same tax cuts ... go figure ...)

6. AAwwww, poor l'il Repubs...
...having their "brand" brought down by Georgie Peorgie.

But, one might ask, where the hell were they for the last 6 years, while Georgie was accomplishing this feat?

Well, they were right there, enabling and rubber stamping his every move.

No, idiots: it was not just Georgie Boy who pulled down your "brand", it was all of you. And whining about it now just makes you look like the stooges you are, were and always will be.

Just remember: your blind loyalty to Bush and team will forever mark you. And that ain't about brand, it's about issues, integrity, *values* if you will. What you have shown is that you value party above all, and you were willing to toe the Bush line on everything without regard to whether it is right or not. Now it looks like some of you will have to pay the price at election time. Well, Whoopee! I say.
