by Mike Hall, May 16, 2007
The gaggle of Republican presidential candidates on stage last night in Columbia, S.C., at the second debate for the White House hopefuls, sought to appeal to the party’s extreme conservative core that holds the biggest influence in the race for the nomination. As a result, the debate centered mostly on social issues, support for President Bush’s stay-the-course/surge policy for Iraq and opposition to rolling back Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.
While Democratic presidential candidates have discussed workers’ freedom to form unions, the need for good jobs, quality, affordable health care and secure pensions, the Republican candidates made no mention of these issues.
As Eternal Hope writes on Daily Kos.
For the Republican candidates, poverty did not matter. For the Republican candidates, taking care of our veterans and treating them right did not matter. For the Republican candidates, how to solve the problems in Iraq did not matter. For the Republican candidates, health care did not matter….For the Republican candidates, trade policy did not matter.
