Spc. Michael James Jaurigue, 20, of Texas City, was one of three Fort Bragg, N.C., soldiers who died Saturday in an explosion in Salahuddin province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
Jose Jaurigue said his son joined the military after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
"He told us he wanted to go to Ranger school and then eventually become a Green Beret," Jose Jaurigue said in a story for The Galveston County Daily News. "You knew he would do it, too, because he was so focused."
Jaurigue said his son was dedicated to the Army and its mission*.
"He told his aunt that, If I die, at least I will know there's a good reason," Jose Jaurigue recalled. "He was really, really hurt by 9/11. He was too young then to do something about it but said someday he would (join the Army) to make sure (terrorists) don't do something like that again."
Michael Jaurigue had just returned to Iraq from a two-week leave on May 14.http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=95dcc5aefc740b8bhttp://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4842201.htmlThis young man was patriotic; cared deeply about 9/11, joined the army to protect his country, became a member of the elite 82nd Airborne, went through extensive training as a paratrooper...
But instead of participating in assaults on Al Qaeda strongholds in Afghanistan, or even Iraq, he was driving around in a police action in the middle of a civil war. The local police station in the town where he and two others got blown to bits was attacked the same week; six policemen were killed. That's too bad, but it WAS NOT AN ASSAULT ON NEW YORK CITY! Nor, in all liklihood, did those who did it have any intention of coming to North America and emulating Timothy McVeigh.
*If only our CinC were dedicated to the army's mission (the name department of DEFENSE is a clue)
Our Memorial Day tributes in years past were insufficient for those who died honorably in just causes. There is no tribute on earth adequate for those who have been misused and turned into cannon fodder for this administration's adventurism. Sadly, in the grand scheme of things, this country deserves whatever downside consequences befall it. If we never saw another drop of Iraqi - or other mideast - oil, and suffered economic devastation as a result, there would be no legitimate argument to say it was not fitting.
