Al Gore against any attempt to impeach Bush

Thursday, May 31, 2007 20:43 IST

WASHINGTON: Former US vice president Al Gore, a staunch critic of George W Bush, has said he doesn't agree with calls for impeaching the president due to lack of "time" and "consensus."

Many democrats feel that Bush should be impeached for allegedly misleading the country deliberately in the lead up to the war in Iraq.

"With a year and a half to go in his term and with no consensus in the nation as a whole to support such a proposition, any realistic analysis of that as a policy option would lead one to question the allocation of time and resources," Gore said during an interview with PBS.

Pressed on whether he believed that impeachment is a good use of time, Gore replied, "I don't think it is. I don't think it would be successful."

1. So do we hate Gore now? Do we abandon the Gore in 08 stuff?
He doesn't like attacks on other Democrats and now he's not for impeachment. Surely y'all wanna start the Hate Gore in 08 campaign.

4. Like every candidate, he's wrong on a few issues
Though I think he's less wrong on fewer issues than most.

5. I disagree with his stand on this issue. Hate is a strong word, often used by
Clinton supporters to emotionally deflect valid criticism.

I like Gore a lot, but I disagree with him on this issue, and I have no problem saying so.
similarly, I can disagree with Clinton on particular issues or discuss her odds of winning. The odd thing is, when I do, I'm assaulted by her supporters as hating her.

I think hate is the wrong word. I'm looking for the best candidate.

8. DK has the right Idea. Go after CHENEY.
I would love to hear Gore at least say that.

He's hardly shy about criticizing Cheney/Bush. But like so many is scared of the "I" word.

I don't get it.

2. I disagree strongly with Al on this.
I think it sets a horrendous precedent going forward for future Presidents. It says, "do what you want, if it's not timely or if we can't all agree, you'll get away with it."

An average citizen would never be given this kind of a break, and neither should a President. A President should know better, and should be held to a higher standard.

I can hear it now: "Well, look at what George Bush did back when he was in office. Congress didn't do a thing to stop him, so why are they picking on my administration now?" It's a bad precedent to set. We'll live to regret it if we don't.

6. Yes we will live to regret it
that is what is happening now for all the times we let past criminals get away with things and allowed pardons for people who obviously broke the law and hurt our country. If allowed to get away with it now they will start from this point next time and it will not take them long to seal the deal with this country.

9. He is right that there is not a consensus yet, but it is building...
The Dems didn't want to impeach Nixon until the consensus became overwhelming.

While we won't force him from office with impeachment proceedings we WILL HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE -- and that is exactly what Gore is advocating -- the citizens holding the powerful accountable.

I think Gore has a bit of blind spot on this one and that he is likely to change his tune when U.S. citizens change demand investigations and action as appropriate based on the findings of those investigations.
