Jerusalem Post Raises Money for Rudy Giuliani
by Margaret Kimberley | Jun 14 2007

You read that correctly. The right wing Jerusalem Post is sending out a fund raising email on behalf of Giuliani.

Hmmm. A foreign newspaper raises money on behalf of an American presidential candidate? Where is the outrage? Of course, none will be expressed. The Norman Finkelstein/Walt/Mearsheimer lesson has been learned. Don't mess with Israel or the lobby whose very existence you aren't allowed to acknowledge.

Why is this email a big deal? Well, for starters, foreigners are not supposed to make contributions to American political campaigns. The fund raising letter doesn't bother to raise that point. Of course Americans received the email, that is how its existence became public. It is also true that the message would have reached Israelis and other non-Americans. Also, corporations are not supposed to make contributions to American political campaigns, even in kind donations like sending an email. The Democrats won't complain because they all feed from the same AIPAC trough. You will be able to hear a pin drop.

Imagine if any of the Democrats used a newspaper located in a foreign nation to send a letter bashing Republican candidates. Do you think the national corporate media would let it pass? My guess is no. To date, not one major newspaper or television network has said anything about Giuliani and the Jerusalem Post.

Republicans can do no wrong. Mitt Romney can tell blatant lies (Saddam banned inspectors) in debates but Democratic hair cuts are fodder for fake outrage. The New York Times gushes over every utterance from Giuliani's lips so it is safe to assume that his campaign's use of a foreign newspaper to collect cash will never make the front, middle or back pages of that or any other paper.

2. They sent out an apologetic email, since they were caught
Clarification:

In recent days, registered users of jpost.com have received a paid email advertisement for Rudy Giuliani.

The bottom of this email advertisement stated that it was "Paid for by the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee, Inc." However, correct practice is to mark such emails as advertising in the "Subject" box as well. Because of an internal error, this practice was not followed. We have taken steps to insure that it will be in future.

We would like to stress again that the content of this advertisement has no connection to The Jerusalem Post newspaper or its online content, and does not reflect the editorial views of The Jerusalem Post in any way.
