Two weeks old, as you can tell by the casualty report. We're now up to 496 dead. Damn, those numbers are racking up.
To the editor:
The situation in Iraq is continuing to deteriorate. Thirty-two American military personnel were killed in Iraq in the last 30 days for a total of 464. An additional 278 service men and women have been wounded for a total of 2,679 (
http://www.lunaville.org/warcasualties/Summary.aspx).
But there is hope for our democracy. In the referendum to impeach Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Ashcroft for high crimes and misdemeanors, 33,000 voted last month, which brings the total to over 383,000 Americans who demand their impeachment. The current Articles of Impeachment (18 total;
http://www.votetoimpeach.org) include the following. Some of these are very timely in the light of the recent rulings of two federal courts that citizens and noncitizens accused of terrorist acts have the right to legal counsel and the U.S. court system:
1) Seizing power to wage wars of aggression in defiance of the U.S. Constitution, the U.N. Charter and the rule of law; carrying out a massive assault on and occupation of Iraq, a country that was not threatening the United States, resulting in the death and maiming of tens of thousands of Iraqis, and hundreds of U.S. GI's.
2) Lying to the people of the U.S., to Congress and to the United Nations; providing false and deceptive rationales for war.
3) Authorizing, ordering and condoning direct attacks on civilians, civilian facilities and locations where civilian casualties were unavoidable.
4) Acting to strip United States citizens of their constitutional and human rights; ordering indefinite detention of citizens, without access to counsel, without charge and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention, based solely on the discretionary designation by the executive of a citizen as an "enemy combatant."
5) Ordering indefinite detention of noncitizens in the United States and elsewhere, and without charge, at the discretionary designation of the attorney general or the Secretary of Defense.
It would take up too much space to list all the Articles of Impeachment here, but I hope the point is clear.
Thank you,
