Disempower Play: Local lefties keep pushing for impeachment (Philadelphia Weekly)
Disempower Play
Local lefties keep pushing for impeachment.

by Frank Rubino

Although she’s taken two of her grandchildren into her Bryn Mawr home for the summer, Jane Dugdale’s life hasn’t become all bedtime stories, excursions to Rita’s and other sweet tasks.

In fact the 64-year-old retired schoolteacher is immersed in an increasingly bitter endeavor—the effort to prod the nation’s top Democrats toward impeaching President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

“Americans are literally dying to have these executives impeached and indicted for their crimes,” says Dugdale, co-founder of Main Line Citizens for Impeachment. “I’ve heard all kinds of excuses, but it’s a mystery to me how the Democratic leadership can’t see that this is their responsibility.”

Dugdale, who believes Bush’s and Cheney’s impeachable offenses include lying about their reasons for attacking Iraq and approving the torture of suspected terrorists, led a “honk to impeach” rally outside Bryn Mawr’s Ludington Library last Saturday. And on July 5 she was one of approximately 300 people who packed Center City’s First Unitarian Church to cheer on a cadre of pro-impeachment speakers that included The Genius of Impeachment author John Nichols and Hip Hop Caucus frontman Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr.

Similar “honk-ins” and forums are taking place around the country as national impeachment organizations such as World Can’t Wait (www.worldcantwait.org) and After Downing Street (www.afterdown ingstreet.org) attempt to rev up the initiative.

Dugdale’s longtime friend Gordon Bennett, a retired college instructor, was also at the First Unitarian Church event. The 71-year-old Coatesville resident distributed pro-impeachment postcards that he urged people to mail to speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, House Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers Jr. and other Democrats. ......(more)

. . .
Bennett, co-founder of Chester County Move to Impeach, wants Pelosi to retract her oft-repeated "impeachment is off the table" position. And he's angered by his perception that many Americans who favor impeachment are "acting like sheep, saying, 'Pelosi says impeachment's off the table. Baa.'". . .

He's not the only one. Don't know if I can take one more "I'd like to see Bush and Cheney impeached more than anything, but. . ."
