Waiting for the Other Terror Shoe to Drop
Posted July 19, 2007 | 04:21 PM (EST)

The good news is that Al Qaeda hasn't attacked us on American soil since September 11. The bad news is that Al Qaeda will attack us someday soon.

Based on the recent National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report with its ominous-sounding title, "The Terrorist Threat to the Homeland," Al Qaeda has regrouped, recruited, and re-energized since the days of Tora Bora when they were on the run.

Because of our epic blunders and bottomless misfortunes in Iraq, Al Qaeda has had a bonanza in attracting jihadis as well as spawning home-grown terrorist cells in places like England.

While copycat terrorist attacks are nearly impossible to stop because they often fly under the radar, the biggest worry is how to second guess and halt a future Al-Qaeda mega attack. Will it be by air cargo (which is still a security gap with TSA?) Or a dirty bomb somewhere in lower Manhattan?

It takes more than listening to one's gut to ably thwart future attacks, Mr. Homeland Security Czar. It means hiring many more Arab-speaking specialists who can monitor Internet chat rooms. It does not mean adding more layers of bureaucracy and red tape, or holding press conferences. .......(more)

1. So what if they attack?
Can they do more damage than Katrina? We are devoting our resources to the wrong enemy. No terrorist ever destroyed a city. Bush and Katrina did.

2. SO WHAT????
Perhaps you'd like to send that to the parents, husbands, wives and children of every innocent person slaughtered by a terrorist. And yes, Bush and his whole criminal regime have one hell of a lot of blood on their hands too, but we're supposed to have more humanity in us than a blithe "so what" if more innocents are murdered.

3. This is the sad legacy of ChimpCo, that Democratic prez candidates NEED
to be shouting from the rooftops: All the money, all the effort, all the soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, all the Homeland Security/Patriot Act bullshit, all the fear--WE ARE NOT SAFER TODAY!!!! All Repubs need to be tied to this failure. Could Chimpy's effort to defeat terrorism have been MORE mismanaged, gone MORE wayward and off-track? Hard to believe. The incredible thing is, after this NIE report was released, the Repugs STILL aren't freaking out with pitchforks over what we Dems knew all along--we're NOT fighting the RIGHT ONES "over there", we're wasting our resources and our military on a meritless debacle. It's insane.
