Waiting for the Other Terror Shoe to DropPosted July 19, 2007 | 04:21 PM (EST)
The good news is that Al Qaeda hasn't attacked us on American soil since September 11. The bad news is that Al Qaeda will attack us someday soon.
Based on the recent National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report with its ominous-sounding title, "The Terrorist Threat to the Homeland," Al Qaeda has regrouped, recruited, and re-energized since the days of Tora Bora when they were on the run.
Because of our epic blunders and bottomless misfortunes in Iraq, Al Qaeda has had a bonanza in attracting jihadis as well as spawning home-grown terrorist cells in places like England.
While copycat terrorist attacks are nearly impossible to stop because they often fly under the radar, the biggest worry is how to second guess and halt a future Al-Qaeda mega attack. Will it be by air cargo (which is still a security gap with TSA?) Or a dirty bomb somewhere in lower Manhattan?
It takes more than listening to one's gut to ably thwart future attacks, Mr. Homeland Security Czar. It means hiring many more Arab-speaking specialists who can monitor Internet chat rooms. It does not mean adding more layers of bureaucracy and red tape, or holding press conferences. .......(more)
