My LTTE ripping anti-abortionists showing abortions in public
Columnist clouded in judgment

This in regard to Common Sense writer Rey Flores' support for demonstrators ambushing families with graphic pictures of abortions (July 16). I realize that Flores is an ardent supporter of the anti-abortion movement, and it seems he will do and say just about anything to promote this cause. But Flores has clearly allowed his fanaticism to cloud his better judgment.
No one has the right to shove disturbing pictures in the face of unsuspecting passers-by and the children that they might be accompanying. If the pictures were of blown-up soldiers or mangled war victims, would Flores be just as supportive of this type of protest (after all, he claims to be anti-war)? If they were autopsy photos of women who died getting back alley abortions, would Flores want to subject his elementary school-age children to these images? How about a nice sign featuring the stoning deaths sanctioned by our good buddies in Saudi Arabia?

There are appropriate venues for this vile form of protest. All of them are out of view of innocent children. I don't need Flores and his ilk deciding if and when my kids will discover the nature of abortion (or war, or the ravages of poverty, or sexual abuse at the hands of Christian church leaders). Those are subjects that I will explain to my children when I, not Flores, deem they are mature enough to handle them.

I'm all for sharing as much information on any subject as is sanely possible, but it would never be at the psychological expense of children. Obviously, Flores harbors no such qualms about damaging sensitive juvenile minds, as long as he gets his viewpoint across to the public.

1. Good letter
and right on target. I bet you'll even find some anti-abortion folks who agree with you--not many, but some! Hope this makes these people stop and think before they shove pictures in people's faces. But it does give one an idea--trade photos of the results of back-alley abortions with them! Ask which is more of a viable human being.

3. I actually changed someone's mind on this one
I brought this protest up to a co-worker who I knew was very anti-abortion. For the first 30 minutes of our discussion/argument he made very irrational claims about how showing kids abortions was right. I gave him examples of things that he wouldn't like shown in public to his kids and he stuck to his guns for a while but I finally convinced him, with examples of my own (blown up soldiers, porn, autopsy photos of dead patients who got backroom abortions) that I was sure he wouldn't want his kids to see. At first he tried to rationalize his argument by saying his kids see this on television and in movies. I eventually convinced him that this wasn't the same and he did finally calm down enough to admit that I was right. I was shocked.

2. Nicely done, k, r, and thanks for saying this, it's about time.
Whenever I've seen those signs, I always say that it would be very helpful to know the full story behind the picture. (i.e., the woman's story).

4. Yes, perhaps the demonstrators with thier overblown graphic pictures
need to see graphic pictures blown up in the same proportions of the once-living children Bush blew apart with his cluster bombs. Or pictures blown up in he same proportions of a rusty coathanger stuck in the uturus of a young woman that died from the procedure.

But then again, most of us have known for quite some time that antiabortionists do not really care about life with it breath. They care only for being driven by their own contemptible emotional sensations
