Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice finds that her star is fading, by Stanford Prof Joel Brinkley
Joel Brinkley is a professor of journalism at Stanford University and a former foreign policy correspondent for the New York Times.

"How things change.

A few months ago, she decided to write an opinion piece about Lebanon. She enlisted John Chambers, chief executive officer of Cisco Systems as a co-author, and they wrote about public/private partnerships and how they might be of use in rebuilding Lebanon after last summer's war. No one would publish it.

Think about that. Every one of the major newspapers approached refused to publish an essay by the secretary of state. Price Floyd, who was the State Department's director of media affairs until recently, recalls that it was sent to the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and perhaps other papers before the department finally tried a foreign publication, the Financial Times of London, which also turned it down.

As a last-ditch strategy, the State Department briefly considered translating the article into Arabic and trying a Lebanese paper. But finally they just gave up. "I kept hearing the same thing: 'There's no news in this.' " Floyd said. The piece, he said, was littered with glowing references to President Bush's wise leadership. "It read like a campaign document."

Floyd left the State Department on April 1, after 17 years. He said he was fed up with the relentless partisanship and the unwillingness to consider other points of view. His supervisor, a political appointee, kept "telling me to shut up," he said. Nothing like that had occurred under Presidents Bill Clinton or George H.W. Bush. "They just wanted us to be Bush automatons."

and a couple of funny comments for the Two Cents column

Question was what should Condi's next job be?
"Regis and Condoleezza" has a nice ring to it.

Ray Heigemeir,

San Francisco

She should go to Iraq and dig graves for all of the innocent people who have been killed as a result of this idiotic war. Harsh? Yes. Just? Yes.

I wish to God, she could work at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Maybe that would bring her back to planet Earth.

Return to Stanford and study Mideast history so she can learn where she went wrong. A second course on war and peace would not hurt either.

I think Condi should get a summer job as an embassy guard in Baghdad.

1. What Star?
Not even a dwarf planet in the firmament--more like a dust ring around Uranus.

5. Significant article, she was Provost at Stanford, now a prof from there
is essentially speaking out against her, pointing out she can't get her ideas or opinions printed by the so called 'free press' with good reason too.

Perhaps she will no longer be able to return to Stanford? We get our medical care there and it would bug me if she were anywhere nearby.

out dirty old towel in a third rate sleazy motel.

'Tis strange how she chases after men of notoriety.
A few things we do know for certain abut this strange creature. Condi chased after president Clinton, Monica Lewinsky style, and was shunned. Accordingly Condi and junior got rather close...or at least she like to call junior her husband! Now she has taken up golf and is looking for a few hot tips from Tiger Woods.

6. While we are bashing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, here is a doozy

Interviewer: Would you consider a position in business or on Wall Street?

Rice: I don't know what I'll do long-term. I'm a terrible long-term planner. I was supposed to be a music major and concert pianist, and here I sit. I love serving on corporate boards, and I find American business and our corporations to be the engines of innovation for this country and, therefore, an engine of innovation for the world. One thing I've tried to do is to institutionalize the public-private partnership. The government can't do it all. When you talk about winning hearts and minds around the world, we are but a small part of what most of the world encounters about America.

This woman has a Phd, and does not know how to do long term planning. How the hell did she get her Phd?

BTW: From the Academic World, some people at Stanford were glad see Rice leaving for government work because, if she thought you were against her, she would make your life into a living hell. For some strange reason I think that is what Rice specializes in, making a person life a living hell.

edit: stupidity

8. He quit after 17 years cause he was told to shut up?
You can tell he wasn't in a blue collar job where that gets you an invitation to the parking lot for a good old fashioned ass kicking. What a wus.

10. That's What Policy Makers Do--Talk and Argue and Make Policy
They don't write political spin and puff pieces for incompetent political hacks appointed by other political hacks. That's what Rove's job was supposed to be. Instead, Rove's making the policy, and everyone else is supposed to kiss ass.
