Another nail in the coffin
FBI chief's contradiction of Gonzales is a further sign
it's time for AG to go

July 28, 2007

Enough is enough. Or in this case, more than enough.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' evasions, circumlocutions
and now outright lies are not only an embarrassment to the
Bush administration, they are a blight on the very integrity
of the nation's system of justice. The latest example was
the testimony of FBI Director Robert Mueller about the
contents of a conversation Gonzales had as White House
counsel about a dispute over a national security
eavesdropping plan. Mueller directly contradicted the
attorney general, who said the surveillance program never
came up.

-snip-

If this were the first contradiction to Gonzales' sworn
testimony to the Congress, it might be dismissed as faulty
memory. But there's an extremely disturbing pattern of similar
contradictions involving Gonzales on this and other matters,
such as the firing of federal prosecutors for political reasons.

-snip-

This entire saga is appalling. For the nation's highest-ranking
law enforcement official to be exposed as a liar under oath is
beyond the pale. If Gonzales doesn't have the good sense to
resign or President George W. Bush doesn't have the wisdom
to ask him to resign, then the Congress will have no choice
but to demand a special counsel. But that would be a colossal
waste of time and public money. The last thing the nation
needs now is a constitutional confrontation over executive
privilege or a special counsel to investigate whether Gonzales
has committed perjury.

1. Gonzo and others have said they can't talk much about it cause it is/was
a secret program. But why didn't he take the committee into closed session? Just to avoid this scene? For the live of me, I can not understand that!

2. To the contrary, what we DO need is a confrontation
over executive privilege, particularly when Bush tries to pull it out of his ass to cover his own criminal actions.

3. Did Gonzo just get lost in the web of lies that is the Cheney gov't?
Too many lies over too many years to be able to remember exactly which little gossamer connects where. So many of the junctions look the same.

But expect Bush to stand by his little lost arachnid. Fredo's memories are more than good enough
to ruin Bush and bruise The Dick.
