~snip~ President Bush shows the same disregard for our democracy and its balance of powers as President Nixon did. But the Nixon administration still had men of integrity: Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson resigned rather than carry out President Nixon's order to fire the Watergate special prosecutor.
Mr. Gonzales and President Bush are beholden to each other, a codependency that could do major harm to the checks and balances on which our democracy is built. Mr. Gonzales will never pursue contempt charges against Bush administration officials, and President Bush will never ask Mr. Gonzales to leave, lest his replacement do the job too well.
Only a narrowly focused special prosecutor, armed with grand jury subpoenas, can bring this runaway administration to heel.
