HBO Airs A-Bomb Footage Kept from Media for Decades
On the 62nd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima -- widely ignored elsewhere in the media today -- HBO aired tonight a documentary by Steven Okazaki titled "White Light/Black Rain." It mainly focuses on a few survivors of the attack in 1945, which took at least 150,000 lives. Presumably it will receive repeat airings.

The film also features extremely graphic footage shot in Hiroshima and Nagasaki shortly after the bombings by an American military film crew -- and then kept from the press and public for decades.

In the early 1980s, I helped bring the existence of this long-suppressed footage to light, and later wrote about it at length for the book that I co-authored with Robert Jay Lifton, "Hiroshima in America." The footage was used extensively in the award-winning 2004 film "Original Child Bomb," for which I served as an adviser.

Here is a full report on how the footage came to exist -- and then hidden from all.

1. If Shrub* sees that footage, he'll use the "bomb" for sure
...claiming it doesn't kill everyone! The monster Bush is just that twisted in his thinking.

2. And lets understand that those bombs are minuscule in comparison to the nukes...
that we are talking about today... So, really if a nuke is launched, and hits anywhere close to you.... You can kiss your ass goodbye... NOW!

5. Thanks for the head's up...I've got it Tivo'd now.
This should be mandatory viewing by everyone in all Nuclear nations. To echo a similar note from above, these bombs are NOTHING compared to the Fusion bombs of today.

7. Where can I find the footage?
Being somewhat obsessively fascinated with the subject of Hiroshima I would really like to see it.

8. I don't know where you can find the footage
But at least on this documentary if you don't have HBO the DVD was released today according to Amazon. I ordered it since I can't depend on Hollywood video to stock it.

9. I watched it with my kid
I want him to understand that these yahoos screaming to drop nukes have no frigging CLUE as to what they are screaming for. Nuclear war is nothing to play with.

10. I watched it with my kid too
He is fourteen and is forming opinions and I wanted him to see the devastation brought on by nuclear war. It brought about a long conversation about those yahoos screaming to just drop the bomb in Iraq. I wanted him to see how many innocent people were swept up in those few moments and how generations were affected long after the trees grew back. Great history lesson.

11. Excellent film.
Brought tears to my eyes.
Reminded me of when I went to ground zero and the a-bomb museum in Hiroshima.
So sad.

There was some music in the film where a guy was pinting while another guy was playing some heavily processed trumpet.
Can anyone tell me who they were?
