A costly victory
When Jose Padilla was arrested at Chicago's O'Hare airport in May 2002 after a flight from Pakistan, the nation was still reeling from the 9/11 attacks and fearful of fresh terrorism. Padilla seemed like everyone's nightmare — a U.S. citizen who had become a radical Muslim, joined a group whose goal was killing Americans and returned to the USA with what authorities characterized as plans to do terrible harm.
His conviction Thursday in a federal court in Miami — on charges of conspiring to kill, kidnap, maim and commit other terrorist acts abroad — could bring him life in prison and is a victory for anti-terrorism prosecutors.
That's the good part of the story. Almost everything else about it is an embarrassment.
