Big, strong, ugly: the great APEC wall rises
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/09/01/apecfence_wideweb__470x317,0.jpg
A FENCE of steel 2.8 metres high has risen in Sydney's heart, locking it down for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit and heralding a week of commuter chaos.

Workmen yesterday bolted the fence into concrete blocks along Bridge Street, Macquarie Street and around Circular Quay.

Today it will be extended across the Botanic Gardens, blocking public access to the Opera House. The only way through the five-kilometre-long fence will be gates patrolled by police and security guards, who can ask for ID and insist on knowing why people want to enter the security zone.

While the security fence went up, workmen rolled out the red carpet at Kirribilli House for US President George Bush, who will have a private dinner on Wednesday with Prime Minister John Howard and his wife, Janette. Razor wire went up around Garden Island yesterday in readiness for Mr Bush, who will be the honoured guest at an Australian Defence Force lunch with Mr Howard on Wednesday.

1. Barricades and police - must mean our war criminal president is in town
I mean, really, what's with this "red carpet" treatment? Bush deserves the "orange jumpsuit" treatment.

Everywhere bush goes, countries (including our own) have to cordon off entire areas, sometimes entire cities, and use them as an official "war criminal zone."
