CIA Helped Bush Senior In Oil Venture

NEW YORK — Newly released internal CIA documents assert that former president George Herbert Walker Bush's oil company emerged from a 1950's collaboration with a covert CIA officer.

Bush has long denied allegations that he had connections to the intelligence community prior to 1976, when he became Central Intelligence Agency director under President Gerald Ford. At the time, he described his appointment as a 'real shocker.'

But the freshly uncovered memos contend that Bush maintained a close personal and business relationship for decades with a CIA staff employee who, according to those CIA documents, was instrumental in the establishment of Bush's oil venture, Zapata, in the early 1950s, and who would later accompany Bush to Vietnam as a “cleared and witting commercial asset” of the agency.

According to a CIA internal memo dated November 29, 1975, Bush's original oil company, Zapata Petroleum, began in 1953 through joint efforts with Thomas J. Devine, a CIA staffer who had resigned his agency position that same year to go into private business. The '75 memo describes Devine as an “oil wild-catting associate of Mr. Bush.” The memo is attached to an earlier memo written in 1968, which lays out how Devine resumed work for the secret agency under commercial cover beginning in 1963.

This modification played a seminal role in ending talk of a larger conspiracy... continued>>>>

Keep in mind the car had damage to the windshield glass frame and rear view mirror

Bullets were wizing all around yet the driver took no special precautions.

4. You mean the Prescott Bush stuff?
Yeah, this is an interesting link between generations as far as seeing the larger pattern is concerned. ...No idea why the first person to reply mentions the JFK assassination or whatever, but still, this info seems to have interesting historical value.

8. Barbara, Houston and Zapata, just a coincidence...
The CIA code names for two of the ships used to transport the Bay of Pigs invaders to Cuba were Barbara and Houston, George H. W. Bush’s wife and hometown at that time.

While it has never been declassified there are a lot of clues that the CIA code name for the Boy of Pigs invasion was Operation Zapata.

Many elements of the government and old money were furious that Kennedy didn’t backup the Bay of Pigs invasion with a military invasion of Cuba; Castro’s nationalization of Cuban businesses hit some very deep pockets in the U.S.

11. The official name for the Bay of Pigs operation.....
Operation Zapata.

...Two books in NameBase, "Operation Zapata" and Peter Wyden's "Bay of Pigs: The Untold Story," deal with the 1961 CIA invasion of Cuba that was inherited by President Kennedy as soon as he took office. This was the first embarrassment for a CIA that had come to think of itself as all- powerful. Hundreds of CIA-trained Cubans and dozens of CIA officials blamed Kennedy after he failed to involve U.S. forces to salvage a deteriorating situation. Some of the crucial events in U.S. history since 1961 can be traced back to the Bay of Pigs, and to Kennedy's subsequent desire to rein in the CIA.
"Operation Zapata" presents the declassified portions of the twenty meetings held by the Taylor Commission to investigate what went wrong. Top CIA, military, and national security officials testified, as well as some Cubans who participated in the invasion. Some names are deleted, and the material is fairly esoteric except to those who have studied the actual invasion. But it remains valuable as an unimpeachable historical reference.
