Why Iraqi Farmers Might Prefer Death to Paul Bremer's Order 81
Why Iraqi Farmers Might Prefer Death to Paul Bremer's Order 81

By Nancy Scola, AlterNet. Posted September 19, 2007.

Heard about the thousands of farmer suicides in India? Well, Iraqi farmers may be next thanks to the work of U.S. diplomat Paul Bremer and his Monsanto friends.

Anyone hearing about central India's ongoing epidemic of farmer suicides, where growers are killing themselves at a terrifying clip, has to be horrified. But among the more disturbed must be the once-grand poobah of post-invasion Iraq, U.S. diplomat L. Paul Bremer.

Why Bremer? Because Indian farmers are choosing death after finding themselves caught in a loop of crop failure and debt rooted in genetically modified and patented agriculture -- the same farming model that Bremer introduced to Iraq during his tenure as administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority, the American body that ruled the "new Iraq" in its chaotic early days.

In his 400 days of service as CPA administrator, Bremer issued a series of directives known collectively as the "100 Orders." Bremer's orders set up the building blocks of the new Iraq, and among them is Order 81 , officially titled Amendments to Patent, Industrial Design, Undisclosed Information, Integrated Circuits and Plant Variety Law, enacted by Bremer on April 26, 2004.

Order 81 generated very little press attention when it was issued. And what coverage it did spark tended to get the details wrong. Reports claimed that what the United States' man in Iraq had done was no less than tell each and every Iraqi farmer -- growers who had been tilling the soil of Mesopotamia for thousands of years -- that from here on out they could not reuse seeds from their fields or trade seeds with their neighbors, but instead they would be required to purchase all of their seeds from the likes of U.S. agriculture conglomerates like Monsanto.

2. Bremer's orders
If Iraq is now an independent nation, do the orders issued by Bremer still stand?

6. Iraq status
Independent and autonomous being synonyms for each other would indicate that when Maliki or Bush speak of Iraq being autonomous, they are not even close. The clearest definition I found for an autonomous nation. "One which govern's itself independently of any foreign power" You are right, they are neither autonomous or soveriegn currently, a better description would be occupied.

4. So is Monsanto going to go to every field to see if their rouge
GM modified plants are growing there?

I've boughten seeds that seem to spread like wildfire. The new Wave petunia is one of them. I made the mistake of planting it in a flower box, and the next thing I know, it moved into my flower bed and then into a pot with dead carnations. I've pulled it out from underneath the front bushes, I've pulled it out of my Zenia bed and found it in the half acre wildflower garden.

They wouldn't be so bad if they grew and flourished but they grow in the spring and then the aphids attack them. The aphids eat them down to brown spindly things and move on to munch on my other flowers. So you end up halfway through the season with big brown spots where the petunias use to be, and aphids ravishing your other plants. I guess I could use a ton of pesticides to kill off the aphids but I can't afford it and I try to limit the amount of chemicals on my property.

Monsanto may try to bring law suits against everyone who is suffering from the escape of their stupid rogue plants but I wish them luck. I think I will bring a suit against them for infesting my gardens. They have no warnings on the seed packages that this stupid flowers can takeover your gardens or that it attracts aphids by the millions unless you constantly use pesticides.
