Division Problem - The GOP's Ruinous Immigration Stance - WP
"One gets the impression of decent men (referring to Giuliani and Romney), intimidated by the vocal anger of elements of their own party."

"There is a moral hazard as well. Surfing on a wave of voter resentment is easier than rowing on the calmer waters of inclusion and charity. But the heroes of America are generally heroes of reconciliation, not division."

"In 2004, Bush ran in the Latino media on the slogan "Nos conocemos," or "We know one another" -- and both he and Republicans in Congress averaged over 40 percent of the Hispanic vote.

The political effects of conservative opposition to immigration reform have been swift as well. Latino support for GOP candidates dropped back to 30 percent in 2006."
--------------------------------------------------
I am extremely happy that Hispanic voters are blaming the GOP for the immigration bill demise. I am also happy that Kennedy and other liberals were behind the bill in the first place and that most Democrats in the Senate supported the bill, so that Democrats get credit with the Hispanic community.

However, I only hope that many of the attitudes expressed here at DU do not become common knowledge in the Hispanic community. Support here deportation, or better yet self-deportation (it's cheaper and quicker) and opposition to Mexican truck drivers and any legalization of illegal immigrants already here seem to be overwhelmingly popular at DU. I suggest that DU should not launch a Spanish-language version. It might lead to exposure that we do not need.

1. Let Them Go Down With Their Ship
for the party that tries to hang hot button issues, like albatrosses, around democratic necks to voluntarily put this one on themselves (without taking the logical and inevitable step of punishing those who hire illegals for American jobs because it would offend the Deep Pockets) is just too delicious for words. Even Schaudenfreude doesn't cover it.

The GOP is breaking up along its inherent fault lines. Oil and water and blood just don't mix! And you wouldn't want that on a salad, anyway, unless you are a vampire, or Dick Cheney.
