Obama marks '02 anti-war speech

The top strategist for Sen. Barack Obama has just 14 seconds of video of what is one of the most pivotal moments of the presidential candidate's political career.
The video, obtained from a Chicago TV station, is of Obama's 2002 speech in opposition to the impending Iraq invasion. But it is not of the quality or duration that would likely yield an effective campaign ad showcasing that early opposition.
"I would kill for that," Obama strategist David Axelrod said. "No one realized at the time that it would be a historic thing."
File footage aside, Obama and his campaign on Tuesday used the fifth anniversary of that speech to try to maximize the notion he demonstrated sound judgment by opposing an impending war that was then generally popular and backed by two of his leading Democratic rivals.
In a speech in Chicago and twice again later in Iowa, Obama tried to draw a clearer distinction between himself and Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, who both voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq.
"The American people weren't just failed by a president," the Illinois Democrat told several hundred students and others at DePaul University. "They were failed by much of Washington."
