Ron Paul's presidential campaign says it raised more than $5 million in the third quarter.

That was enough to make the first segment of last night's ABC World News, and make pundits mired in conventional wisdom take another look — especially since Paul's fundraising trounced that of the presumed leader among the "second-tier" candidates, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and equaled that of one-time frontrunner John McCain. Paul's total is fully half that of Generalissimo Giuliani and Mitt "Joe Isuzu" Romney.

The Paul campaign is raising the bar considerably for the fourth quarter, setting a fundraising goal of $12 million.

One potential speed bump, not for fundraising, but for the campaign in general is an accelerated deadline — just over a week from now — for primary voters to declare party affiliation in the early state of New Hampshire and the big state of New York.
