Guantanamo: a symbol of US loss of values
The US does not believe the old rules apply in the war against terror.

If you are about my age, you grew up on combat movies in which some American POW told an enemy interrogator that he would supply only his name, rank and serial number.

In the next breath, the American would cite the Geneva Convention in demanding fair treatment of prisoners. Then, that sounded as American as apple pie. Now, we're getting that pie in our face.

1. what's your point?
I read your longer posting on your Guantanamo link and let's not confuse issues. Most of us are against the "pre-emptive" war against Iraq, but these prisoners have nothing to do with that.

These prisoners were actual Al Qaeda combatants captured while shooting at our troops in Afghanistan a few months after we attacked Al Qaeda in response to 9/11/01, and most of us were in support of that as opposed to the war in Iraq. I don't know about you, but I was.

You show a lot of pity for these terrorists who you admit are not mistreated, and yes, I admit, jail is jail, and nobody loves that, hey, they shot bullets at us and they got caught.

They don't need any counsel. All of them have been interrogated. If any of them don't belong there, it would have come out long ago, and many have been released presumably for such reasons. We treat them a lot better than they would treat us.

I would advise that you save your pity for when it's really needed.

2. the japanese called the chinese 'ILLEGAL COMBATANTS' as well
and often executed the accussed.

had some pretty bizzar methods for picking them out of the crowd as well, hair cuts, tans, etc...

never thought i'd live to see the day were we would conduct ourselves in the same way of imperial japan during wwII

i liked the world a whole lot better when we not only championed the geneva convention but subscribed to it.

4. we can't be compared to the japanese of WWII
this is not a valid comparison.

if you want to make a valid point, use a valid piece of data or comparison.

3. some weren't even caught in Afganistan
but in Pakistan, and even in Africa and Europe. We don't know how many, if any, were actually captured during fighting. As the article said, many were caught by Afghan warlords for a bounty. Some who obviously didn't belong there have been released; the rest are held without any attempt at a proper tribunal so far.

5. New Rules
The US has made up new rules of war to suit it's own agenda. If our troops were captured in Iraq would these rules be alright with the US or it's citizens?

No fair trials. No rights. These prisoners are still human beings and as such still have human rights.
