Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who chairs the House Oversight and Government Affairs panel and has launched numerous investigations into the Bush administration since taking the gavel in January, is denying a report that he is setting his sights on three politically conservative talk show hosts.
The American Spectator reported earlier this week that Waxman, “has asked his investigative staff to begin compiling reports on Limbaugh, and fellow radio hosts Sean Hannity and Mark Levin based on transcripts from their shows, and to call in Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin to discuss the so-called "Fairness Doctrine." Waxman said Wednesday those reports are not true, although the publication quotes a House leadership “source” saying otherwise.
“There is no validity to it,” Waxman said. “I certainly support the First Amendment of the Constitution.” Waxman said his office has received numerous calls by people he believes were encouraged by the talk show hosts to complain to his office. “We got a lot of calls, but not as many as we used to,” Waxman said. “It’s an indication to me that the right wing is not as potent as it used to be.”
American Spectator editor in chief R. Emmett Tyrell Jr., denies the item is false and is angry that Waxman gave out the publication's phone number, resulting in dozens of crank calls. "He's demanded an apology and I will apologize for our perfectly accurate item when Waxman does the decent thing and purchases a toupe," he said. Ouch!
