What happened?
What happened?

What happened to carrying about the sick and poor? Where did THAT go?

All my life I have been reminded of those poorer than me. I may not have built a home or served them soup but somewhere inside me I think about them. I have always been told that the way to cover myself to be able to look in the mirror was to pray about, think about, at least pay some sort of attention to the fact that out there somewhere are poor people sick people not that they need pity we just check ourselves let's say on a weekly basis (for those who don't kneel and pray nightly anymore) to consider those who have it worse than us. Even if they are in bad straights only for a short time like when my cousin spent Christmas in the hospital. We think about them.

We may not actually give money to Jerry Lewis but at least somewhere inside of us we think about "Jerry's kids" and we feel better because we do. We set off doing something and during the winter holidays we give money here and there. We wear a pink ribbon or at least nod to someone who is wearing one in a "I'm with ya" kind of way.

That we used to do. Now we not only ignore the "lesser"s of the society we actually, actively forget that they exist in fact we exult the rich and powerful and those who exploit the situation.

What happened?

When did this become okay?

Well I don't think it did. Jerry set a record for fundraising this year. There was a time when that telethon was a marking of the year inwhich we all stood still for a day and invited the sick and infirmed into our living rooms and dens via the TV. What I had almost forgotten about had a record setting year. What a wonderful affirmation. This reminds me I need to send them a check.

But now I see that the cold gray days of the dead of winter have come racing back into my world. They actually attacked a 12 year old kid who just came out of a coma. Who got medical attention by... who cares how he got it HE GOT MEDICAL ATTENTION is that not enough anymore? Members of the Senate actually were a part of this.

It is almost enough to make a grown man cry but I stop and think about those who have it worse than myself and realize that it ain't that bad and that I really need to get off my ass do something to help someone ........ or at least keep them in mind ... okay at the very least don't attack them and their family or post their home address for the general public.

Jesus christ!

1. If you ask me, it became widely-accepted in the 80s.
A turning point, that was.

As for me, I have NEVER exulted the greedy / powerful. EVER. Never have, never will.

2. I joined food not bombs
and feed the homeless. There are a ton of soup kitchens that need help and you can donate goods and food to food pantries. Every little bit helps.
