US to reduce visa delays (India)
10/11/2007 7:51:44 AM

There is some good news for students aspiring to fly to the US things. The US embassy seems to be streamlining its visa process.

Thousands of students in India dream of studying abroad but after the long grind of actually securing admission, their fate is decided at the visa counter. Delays in getting appointments, long queues and other long drawn procedures can often be a daunting task, but for those planning to go to the US things may become easier.

For starters there will be a new Consulate General coming up in Hyderabad by next year and the Mumbai Consulate will be moving to a bigger building by 2009 and will be better equipped to handle more visa applications. The business executive program that expidites business visas will also be expanded and efforts are on to reduce waiting time for an interview to two weeks. However on the downside there is no change in the H1B cap and the application fee for visas might increase in the months to come.

So for those who were shying away from applying to universities in the US due to visa delays, now perhaps be the right time to rethink that decision.
