Mayor Bloomberg Tackles Poverty
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 01:03 PM by groovedaddy
I'm not a Bloomberg fan by any means BUT where are the Dem office holders who are taking on poverty like this guy is? Ending poverty would solve many problems and would probably save a huge amount of money in the long run. Edwards has at least promised to meet this issue head on, if elected President.

Mayor Bloomberg Tackles Poverty
Politicians have mostly skirted poverty as a political issue since President Lyndon Johnson declared war on it more than four decades ago. Even the federal government’s method of measuring poverty is a relic from the 1960s — all but useless to cities and states seeking an accurate picture of the problem. Enter Michael Bloomberg, New York’s solutions-minded mayor, who recently took on the challenge — and the measurement — of poverty.

2. a vacuum
Such a vacuum has been created by the stubborn refusal of the Democratic party leadership and their sycophants to take a strong stand on the side of the have-nots, that we now have Republican opportunists moving into that area that once belonged exclusively to the Democratic party.

Republicans talking about poverty is a symptom of the weakness and moral failing of the modern Democratic party leadership. It is also an early warning sign for Democrats who truly care about the future success of the party and about the principles and ideals of the party.

3. I think you hit the nail on the head!
The Democratic Party is certainly not what it used to be, but it's up to we "rank & file" Dems to change that.
You know how bad it's gotten when many of the Dem Federal office holders are to the right of dick nixon.

4. interesting challenge
It is an interesting challenge. There definitely is a battle going on within the party about its direction. Power, money, and media are on one side, the people are on the other.

5. Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat who ran as a Republican
Bloomberg despite his boatloads of cash, wasn't going anywhere in New York City's decidedly tribal Democratic politics. He chose to run as a Republican because he knew he could win it. Philosophically the guy's still a Democrat. He believes that government not only can work but that it can work to improve the livese of people.

Ask any New Yorker who they like better--Mike or Rudy.
