Reagan Legacy pt. 2 The real Reagan Memorial Highway: Central America to your town.
Ronald Reagan’s clandestine wars basically ruined the economies of Central America for the workers. As a result, people from Central America must travel one of the world’s most dangerous routes to get jobs in America. On the way, they face every imaginable danger including being robbed, raped and/or killed. Those that hitch a ride on the tanker trains, must be careful not to fall asleep and fall off. Many have lost limbs this way.

It’s ironic that Reagan said our government shouldn’t interfere with business, but decided it was alright for our government to interfere in the internal affairs of Central America. Central America’s wealth is currently quite concentrated in a few hands. Had Reagan not interfered maybe the wealth would have been distributed more fairly and the industrious people of Central America could have thrived working in their home countries. Reagan’s actions thrust an unfair system on the people who would rather stay home, but have no choice but to travel north for U.S. dollars.

The Republicans ignorantly complain about these immigrants who are just trying to survive. Little do they know, that this southern invasion is blowback from Reagan’s foolishness. They don’t even acknowledge the suffering of these poor people, who, it could be argued, deserve a job in the “good” ole USA.

1. I've tried to explain this to my righty, anti-immigrant dad
he doesn't want to know the underylying issue, just wants to be mad at people who don't look like him and learn English fast enough.

2. With respect to foreign policy, it isn't really just Reagan
The US has been doing these things since WWII, and even before. There was a foreign policy cabal that pushed for destroying Communism, that morphed into the Military Industrial complex. Most Bush appointees are disciples. This is a link to excerpts from a great book on the topic. Starting on P.24 in the site, it lists many CIA actions since the 50's, Central America bearing the brunt.

Reagan was the guy who let them, in the for of G. Bush (41), into the White House. He was asleep at the switch, and provided a Presidential rubber stamp for everything they wanted to do. Reagan approved, but did very little orchestrating.
