Dowd: A Wake-Up Call for Hillary
Channeling her inner Cheney, Hillary Clinton dropped a fear bomb, as Michelle Obama might call it, implying in a new ad that if her opponent is elected, your angelic, innocent, sleeping children could die in a terrorist attack.

Only she has the wise head to go nuclear, should that Strangelovian phone call from a power-mad Putin come into the White House at 3 a.m. Her ad shows how composed she would be at the dread moment when she picks up the phone. Her nuke look is feminine, in a tailored camel-colored jacket and gold necklace, yet serious, in Tina Fey black reading glasses.

It’s hard to discern the message of the ad. The scariest thing is not the persistently ringing phone but an Andrea Yates-looking mother who’s creeping up on the sleeping babes in the dark. The point can’t be that Hillary is superior to Obama in international crisis management, because she’s done no more of it than he has. She’s only done domestic crisis management, cleaning up after Frisky Bill.

Is the message that Hillary is Ready on Night One? That she won’t have to waste any time if she’s rousted out of bed in the wee hours, because she’s wearing a pantsuit under her pantsuit? (Or is it just, as Wesley Clark said during an appearance with her in Waco on Friday, that Hillary’s “been in the White House when the tough decisions were made. I guess you’ve been at the bedside when that phone rang at 3 a.m.”)

1. Maureen Dowd is an ass. She thinks every fucking election is a fashion show.
She's the same asshole who announced that the 2000 election's most important issue was Al Gore's suit.

And I'm glad she called Hillary out on her whiny female victimhood.

6. She called him Obambi-No-More
From OP article:

Obambi-No-More briskly dismissed Hillary’s attempt to cast him as a global ingénue. “Senator Clinton may not be aware, but we already had a red phone moment,” he said at an outdoor rally here, with the crowd of 8,000 booing at the mention of Hillary’s ad. “It was the decision to invade Iraq. Senator Clinton picked up the phone and gave the wrong answer. And John McCain picked up the phone and gave the wrong answer. And George Bush picked up the phone and gave the wrong answer.”

Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 10:56 PM by No Surrender
on edit - I'm glad Dowd included this:

On a conference call Friday with Hillary’s ever-more-hysterical male strategists, Slate’s John Dickerson asked exactly when she had been tested in a foreign policy crisis. After a silence long enough to knit a sweater in, as the Web site The Hotline put it, Mark Penn cited “her work on the Armed Services Committee.”

9. MoDo is just another MSM darling pulling for Obama.
Birds of a feather.

Hillary has Wesley Clark and Joe Wilson.

Obama has Tweety Matthews and Maureen Dowd.

I'd rather lose with Clark and Wilson than win with Dowd and Matthews. At least I can look myself in the mirror.

13. BO also has KO...which is sad. I
had such 'hopes' for him. Alas, you can take the boy out of espn, but you can't take the espn out of the boy.

Maureen, I fear, suffers from 'Queen Bee' syndrome. Too bad.

18. once again, if someone doesn't think and believe as you do
they are dismissed and diminished. how sad. you believed in Keith and thought well of him right up till you disagree with him.

This is what is wrong with the party. one slip and we'll through you under the bus. god forbid there be more than one opinion out there. hmm almost sounds like "if you not with us, you're against us"...I forget who was it that said that.......oh yeah, BUSH!

19. I stopped watching KO because of his
sexist comments during the second 1/2 hour of the broadcast. I emailed him twice asking WTF? The third time, my emails were blocked. I guess I was lucky....he responded to many other women in not such a grown-up fashion.

Listen, I'm not a masochist. When someone shows their true colors and starts babbling sexist crap, I'm not going to continue watching him. OK? He's the one who dismissed and diminished me as a woman. Hello!!!!!

I believe women deserve civility....I don't even think we'll ever get respect...but 'please, thank you, excuse me'....yeah...I think we deserve that.

Go ahead and watch him...I don't care. Watch him love BO.

What are you a fucking Republican....where we must march in lock step?

And I didn't 'believe' in Keith...he's not a Goddess or anything...I liked his 'special comments' and watched then. That's it.

20. What are you a fucking Republican....where we must march in lock step?
that's actually funny considering your first post. It sound like for all the world if anyone disagrees with YOU they are ridiculed.....you know, like we all need to be in lock step with YOUR thinking.

And no, I am not now nor have I every been Republican....again it shows how if anyone disagrees you can only respond with name calling. I do not find Keith to be sexist but then again, I'm not looking for it in every sentence or fretting over it. This whole primary has been about either sexism or racism and everyone claims they are neither so they are both pretty much nothing more than red herrings.

22. I believe I can ridicule whomever I want....and guess
what...so can you. If I don't agree with someone, ridicule can be used to diminish them. This is nothing new.

Go ahead and watch Keith...I don't care. This primary is between a woman and a black man...the topics of sexism and racism are going to be raised.

I'm not the only one who has noticed KO's sexist behavior, but, hey, not everyone pays attention.

I prefer blue herrings, don't you?

I think you and I have very different senses of humor.

Good luck to you.

28. What a steaming pile of nonsense.
Keith Olbermann has not been accepting emails at MSNBC since June of 2006, when he had a problem with male wingnuts from a hate site (Olbermann Watch), who deliberately taunted him in email over and over again until he finally said some unsavory things back to them--which, of course, they immediately raced with to the New York Post, which they knew would be sympathetic. MSNBC made him apologize, and then they must have set his old MSNBC email account so it now bounces all mail from the general public. (There's even been mention in the media that he's no longer permitted to answer public email there.)

So, unless you decided KO was a horrible sexist quite some time ago, your story of having had your emails suddenly "blocked" by him recently, and his alleged "responding to many other women in not such a grown-up fashion," cannot possibly be true. It just comes across as yet another one of those shady "I used to like Keith Olbermann UNTIL..." totally fabricated and made-up stories. Unless, of course, you have evidence to provide. If so, please show some.

I've never seen KO treat women on his show with anything but the utmost civility--hardly a surprise considering that back at ESPN, he was known for testifying in sexual harassment cases against male coworkers who harassed the women there.

As for his alleged "love" of Obama, I fail to see it. He didn't even thank him in the acknowledgments to his last book. The Clintons, the Edwardses, even Dennis Kucinich, but no Obama. So much for him being in the Obama back pocket.

And exactly what was your statement "You can take the boy out of ESPN but you can't take the ESPN out of the boy," as it relates to Obama, supposed to mean? Was it supposed to mean:

1. "All people who like sports are stupid; sportscasters like sports; therefore, all sportscasters are stupid" and "KO used to be a sportscaster, therefore he's stupid" and "Only stupid people support Obama; KO is stupid; therefore he supports Obama"?

or:

2. "Blacks are natural athletes; therefore, people who like sports prefer them over whites; all sportscasters like sports; therefore, all sportscasters prefer blacks to whites; KO used to be a sportscaster; therefore, KO prefers blacks to whites"?

That's some bent and twisted and bigoted logic there.

Oh, and next thing you'll tell me is that all men who like sports (ex-sportscasters included) are misogynists; KO used to be a sportscaster; therefore, KO is a misogynist.

17. Well, satire is alive and well in the land of non-readers. . .
. . .Maureen's writing gave my brain cells quite an aerobic workout. . .I REALLY like her double entendres i.e. "Hillary's Wake-up Call"=both the ad call and her campaign shortfalls.

Any of the hatred or name-calling against Maureen on DU is proof positive that she writes satire successfully, in the grand tradition of Voltaire, Mark Twain, or Gore Vidal.

I say fire away, Maureen! We all need skewering to human scale, especially the ones with delusional egos.

As a Senator Obama supporter, I say Maureen should satirize him if he deserves it and I would take pause, just to see him human-sized if necessary.

But ya know what, really centered people like Obama would find Maureen's satirical commentary amusing, if not a chance to be self-reflective, because way down inside Senator Obama is the natural humbling HOPE that he would correct any of his human foibles before Maureen's next article.

I'm not afraid of Maureen's searing satire. I don't think President Obama would be either.

26. This part is a very poor attempt at being a leader
"In the next breath, asked about the women who feel sorry for her, she said: “I think a lot of women project their own feelings and their lives on to me, and they see how hard this is. It’s hard. It’s hard being a woman out there.”

So projection is bad with Obama but good with her?"

In fact I really feel that she has done a disservice to me as a woman. Of course it's hard, it's hard being alive for billions of us, but for her to be so well positioned to win and then say this, and play a victim is a big mistake. Oh wow, I think I'll use that at our next financial's meeting at work when they point out we've overspent or under produced.

27. MoDo calls him Obami,
if she can help finish off Hillary as she did Gore & Kerry, she'll soon turn her venom on Obama.

Citing MoDo's attacks on Hillary serves no purpose other than to divide the left. And that's already coming along nicely without her help.

31. link to article of Maureen Dowd calling Howard Dean a "World Wide Wacko"
...who couldn't possibly be in charge of the military, because he screamed.

(1-22-2004)
Whoa! That was quite the steroid-infused performance. Who's the guy's political consultant -- Russell Crowe? He was so in-your-face, smirking his trademark smirk, it was disturbing to think of him in charge of the military. It's a good thing he stopped drinking and started talking about God.

Sure, Howard Dean was also over the top when he uttered the squeal heard round the world. With one guttural primary primal scream, he went from Internet deity to World Wide Wacko and remix victim, with the scream mixed in on Web sites to punctuate Ozzy Osbourne's ''Crazy Train.''

Read the masterpiece.

That was 2004, some would say.

But...has she apologized?
