The Five Commercials Obama Must Run; The Urgent Need To Un-Vet Hillary Clinton

Posted March 9, 2008 | 04:14 PM (EST)

Fear works. (Read Drew Westen's "The Political Brain".) The 3AM red phone commercial scared voters. It activated the fast-firing neural system that Mandy Grunwald and Mark Penn were targeting. It was worthy of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. Senator Obama outspent Senator Clinton 3-1 in Ohio and Texas and despite his momentum, still lost. Now what? If Senator Obama wants to win in Pennsylvania and in the possible do-over states, he needs to step up his armamentorium. Anything else would be struthious.

If he doesn't go negative -- and take the heat as the press paints him as abandoning his purer-than-thou persona -- he'll lose in Pennsylvania and surrender even more momentum to Senator Clinton. Her campaign will continue to drive the "not-vetted yet" message. They'll continue to link him to Farrakhan through Reverend Wright. They'll use surrogates to raise questions about Michelle Obama's statements. They'll take every mis-step, like the Samantha Power comment, and amplify it. They'll wheel out the tired "we're the victims" canard, like they did by comparing Obama's scrupulous comments about her secrecy to Ken Starrr.

They'll keep hurling all those kitchen sinks at him that they promised to throw. And with Harold Ickes at his in-fighting, knife-fighting best, the super-delegates will start to get nervous at the prospect of the Republicans roughing-up Obama in the general election.

I believe his supporters are ready for him to take this step, and that any undecided, fence-sitters will recognize that he has no choice.

Here are the five commercials that I'd like to see on the air. Let the un-vetting begin.

1. So Bill Clinton never released his earlier returns?
Why am I surprised? Damn I hate how duplicitous these people are.

2. Struthious. That's a good word.
I agree that he needs to call her out, and the tax return commercial is a good idea. But I'm not so sure about the effectiveness of the other ones.

3. That word! Now I have to go look it up:

Of, relating to, or resembling an ostrich or a related bird; ratite.

I'm not sure 'negative' is the way to go. He needs to defend himself, but if he can do it without getting nasty, that would be even better, and more appreciated by many people who are tired of the mud slinging.

And another from the article not often used, spelled wrong I might add!

the aggregate of equipment, methods, and techniques available to one for carrying out one's duties: The stethoscope is still an essential part of the physician's armamentarium.
2. a fruitful source of devices or materials available or used for an undertaking: The new arts center is an armamentarium for creative activity.

5. Oh, you're right!
The author or Huffington Post editors should have caught that one.

6. No, one of YOU video-editing people should do it!
These ads seem simple to do. Anyone with a digital camcorder, a computer with modest video editing software, and time could put these together. (I lack the third ingredient.)
