War running up costs in blood, money (Tant / OnlineAthens)
... Those who mouth the mantra of "the war and the economy" as separate entities should be reminded that these days, the war is the economy ...

After five years and the deaths of 4,000 American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis, Bush's war drags on. Republican presidential hopeful John McCain has voiced nonchalance over the possibility of an American military presence in Iraq for decades or even a century. Democrat Hillary Clinton now makes noises about ending the war, but she joined the quaking chorus of dithering Democrats who rubber-stamped Bush's war in 2002.

Small and splintered though it might be, the American anti-war movement has served as this nation's only opposition "party" since before the conflict began. After half a decade of squandering this nation's blood and treasure in a war launched by lies, it is way past time for this nation's rulers to be reminded daily of the wise words of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre: "When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die." ...
