Clintons -- a last stand that lacks class

By JOEL CONNELLY
P-I COLUMNIST

AS HER ham-handed handlers insult entire states, and her self-absorbed husband indulges in red-faced, finger-wagging outbursts, Sen. Hillary Clinton soldiers on.

It is a joyless campaign, with stump speeches that carry tales of woe and get delivered in a booming voice that could open a wall safe.

A full three months after the Iowa caucuses, nearly two months after Washington's caucuses, the Clintons seem bent on turning the Democrats' fertile ground into scorched earth.

snip//

The miscalculations and misjudgments -- which likely have cost Hillary Clinton the nomination, and Bill Clinton much of his reputation -- are the campaign's own doing.

In years past, the Clintons showed an amazing knack for getting themselves into binds, then escaping tight corners. It has deserted them.

Obama and Hillary Clinton will appear Saturday night when Montana Democrats hold their annual Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner in Butte. It won't be hard to tell which candidacy carries the most baggage.

1. I could care less about "lack of class." I care about lack of principles.
I do not believe there is a firm set of core values and a consistent worldview underlying either Clinton politically. If she had progressive principles, what matter is "class?"

Check out the last line:

But even George W. Bush and Bill Clinton never lied about being under fire.

That is what they will plummet her with if she gets the nomination. It won't be pretty and she can't do a thing, she created her "scary tales" and told them over and over again.

3. Hi, merh.
:hi: No, I hadn't seen that, but you're right, this will get a lot of scrutiny; it already is! And why she went on Leno last night and made a joke of it, or tried to, beggars belief. Her advisors are doing a piss-poor job if you ask me.

5. I just got through watching it
I think that joke was tasteless -

it is sad folks don't see how vulnerable she is - she wasn't liked by folks before the primaries, many conservatives loathe her more than her supporters realize.

I don't care what they say, I truly believe that the right want her to be the nominee because she has so many weaknesses, they know she is vulnerable and is not likeable.

the sad thing is, she has given them more to attack during the primary season, like the snipper lies, she has given them some really some of their most effective weapons - and they didn't even have to ask.

7. Especially tasteless in light of threads like this:

And I absolutely agree the r/w is salivating at the thought of her getting in; people like Scarborough and Buchanan have been actively promoting her and dissing Obama. It's very obvious.

9. But . . .
Bush did claim that he "served his country," when all he did was use his country for personal gain.

And he did make that ridiculous prance across the aircraft carrier deck tarted up in a flight suit.
