Outsourcing 'makes businesses vulnerable'
Outsourcing has been blamed for making businesses more vulnerable to security attacks, according to a new study.

The survey revealed that 90 per cent of the companies which admitted to having been "hacked" had outsourced over 40 per cent of their applications.

Quocirca, who performed the study, said that the keenness of firms to outsource, for speed, convenience and monetary reasons, had left security on the back burner.

Around 20 per cent of businesses admitted to not providing the outsourcing firm with any security in the applications, while 60 per cent said they had not ordered security from scratch.

Howard Schmidt, a former White House cyber-security advisor and board member of Fortify, said: "These survey results help explain the recent, sudden rise in data breaches and should serve as a wake-up call to any executive whose company sits on a pile of mission-critical application code."

The US market has taken the lead in outsourcing, with 61 per cent of companies saying they outsource over 40 per cent of their programming.

It was recently reported that companies are now looking for a cheaper alternative to India, for their outsourcing needs, reported BusinessWeek.

1. Cheaper, cheaper, cheaper. Surely there are sometimes other costs?
Security being one of them.

Russia is currently a hot locale, purportedly, but that can only go so far and we have plenty of competent people in our country that can do the job too.
