The night I tap danced around Iraq
Mark Hopkins
Sunday, April 13, 2008

In the early spring of 2003, my wife Ruth and I were in Sri Lanka, the island country off the southern coast of India. I was there helping to create a college which was later called American National College. I was scheduled to leave for home on a Tuesday and as a final responsibility I had agreed to speak to a group the night before on the subject of the new college and its possibilities for the city and its young people ...

... The invasion was less than a week away ... It took me about 20 minutes to finish my presentation ... My host asked me if I was agreeable to taking some questions from the group ...

I called on a man .. in the second row ... He began slowly as if he was choosing his words carefully but then finished with a flourish, “What … I … would … like … to … know … Dr. Hopkins, is what in the world is the matter with that fool Bush?” ...

We need to regain our former status in the minds and hearts of our long-time friends from around the globe ...
