Earth (day) to Clinton, Obama and McCain

By Barb Shelly, Kansas City Star editorial board

Albert St. George of the editorial board's reader advisory panel raised a good point today: Here it is, Earth Day, and the presidential campaigns are all but silent on the subject of the environment and global warming.

John McCain issued a statement vowing to "protect all of nature's blessings while recognizing that our environmental and economic interests are not mutually exclusive."

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama seem to be preoccupied with other matters--namely the Pennsylvania primary.

Maybe it's just a bad time for candidates to focus on the environment. Maybe the public's attention is riveted on the economy, the war, etc. Maybe the frontrunners don't want to be tagged as the Al Gore of 2008.

At some point between now and November, though, we really need to hear specifics about how the candidates will address carbon emissions, global warming, energy consumption and related matters.

In the meantime, enjoy your tap water in a glass.

If we don't get a Democratic Congress, a Democratic president this election, I'm going to find a cave, crawl and just wait 'till it's all over but the shouting! :kick:
