6. The original intent was
that there wouldn't even necessarily be a popular vote for president. The original Constitutional system of selecting a president was pretty interesting.

Ech state legislature would select electors and each elector would vote for two individuals who would make good presidents. One would have to be from a state other than their own.

Then the House would choose a president from among the top five vote-getters.

An interesting system. No vote of the people needed at all.

It didn't survive the creating of political parties though, the the Constitution was amended.

One by one the states instituted a popular vote for president. South Carolina was the last to give in for the election of 1868.
