Defending Mexico
Re: I will boycott Mexican products until Martin's home, April 25.

I would like to ask letter-writer Roberta Hagar if she has ever been to Mexico.

Have you, Ms. Hagar, ever had the chance to explore what that magnificent country has to offer? Have you ever explored the incredible ruins of Tulum, sat down with the locals to enjoy home made Mexican cooking, or allowed yourself to experience a real Mexican fiesta? If not, I would beg you to stop "begging ... Canadian citizens to boycott Mexico."

As a young, single Canadian citizen, I had the good fortune of working for a world-renowned resort in Mexico and the Caribbean for six years, almost three of which were spent in Mexico, in the state of Guerrero, and Jalisco. After only a few weeks there, I fell madly in love with it.

On my days off, I thought nothing of venturing out in the local towns on my own, or with a few friends, sampling street-side cafes, hitting the beach, exploring the markets, and not once did I feel threatened; quite the opposite, in fact. I had the chance to make all kinds of new friends, and was often invited to fiestas consisting of long afternoons of non-stop food and drinks, laughter, live mariachi bands and dancing until sundown. I went to my friends' houses, where I found something that really caught my interest: family is number one. Large impromptu family gatherings are happy, relaxed affairs, and children stay up late to play safely in their neighbourhoods.

The Mexican judicial system may not be like ours, may not be fair, indeed, but I can tell you, Ms. Hagar, that having travelled to, and lived in, other Latin American destinations, the Mexican system is at par with a lot of those. Mexico is a spectacular country, rich in the arts, with a beautiful culture. It should be explored and enjoyed, not exploited.

I'm not saying Brenda Martin isn't innocent. She may be, she may not. The fact is, unless you are willing to boycott every single country in the world in which a Canadian has been done wrong, I would ask, no I would beg, you to stop your boycott on Mexico.

2. How long ago was this?

My uncle toured Germany during the late 1940's but I hear its changed alot since then?

Many of those resorts are like gated communities, Mexico today is a country under great stress. It's corrupt politicians sold out to the globalist have brought great misery and poverty to Mexico.

A poverty that has caused 10% of the population to flee, that causes the second leading source of hard currency after oil being cash sent home by refugees.
