The Fruits of Republican Rule: More kids in region suffering, study says
Walking the streets of Louisville looking for work, Jeff Dawson and his pregnant wife, Sara, both 23, have a system for feeding themselves and their 2-year-old son.

"Sometimes I go hungry," Jeff Dawson said. "I make sure she eats before I do, and we make sure he eats before us."

With no jobs, no car and no home, they represent what a national study says is a growing trend in Kentucky, Indiana and many other states -- impoverished children and high rates of parents with no regular, full-time employment.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation's annual Kids Count, a ranking of children's health and welfare in all 50 states, showed that Kentucky and Indiana both dropped -- Kentucky from 40th to 41st and Indiana from 31st to 34th.
