Wallis rips Dobson's ripping of Obama
Jim Wallis is an evangelical leader and author who's pretty far removed on the political spectrum from James Dobson, a stalwart of the religious right. And Wallis is unhappy with Dobson's claim that Barack Obama distorts the Bible. Here's a press release from the Wallis camp:

Jim Wallis Criticizes James Dobson's Distortion of Barack Obama's Statements on Faith and Politics

Evangelical leader Jim Wallis, author of The Great Awakening and founder of Sojourners, the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States, today criticized James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, for distorting Barack Obama's statements on faith and politics at the annual Pentecost Conference in 2006 held by Sojourners.

1. Awesome!
For years I've been so upset with reasonable Christians for allowing the fundies to misrepresent Christianity. It's good to hear them speaking up!

He just doesn't get the attention that well-funded fundies in the service of the establishment do. If a tree falls in the forest and all that.

8. I think I saw him on the news last night
It would have been the local news because I was busy during the national news. The local (SF) station might have gotten it from the national, though.

5. Fabulous Response
and a great reason why people other than me should take the lead in responding to the hate filled crap of the religious wrong. This was a respectful, reasoned and smart retort to everything Dobson spouted yesterday.

I really hope the days of Dobson, Perkins and rest of this clique of nutjobs is at an end. If evangelicals can finally move past them I may remove them from my list of disgust.

6. Dobson has done more to destroy the "Obama is a Muslim" strategy than Obama ever could.
Keep it up, Mr. Dobson. We can put you on payroll if you need the money.

7. I met Wallis a few years ago
He's a very down to earth, accessible person. I'm glad he took the time to respond to Dobson.

10. What a spectacular essay
This election will separate the real Christians from the dupes. The true believers in the teachings of Jesus will NOT vote for the anti-environment, pro-war, serial adulterer over the man who actually walks the walk. IMO, enough of them will break away from Robertson & Dobson to make this a landslide. Or, as Schaeffer puts it,

Dobson & Co. have zero credibility with a growing number of otherwise conservative evangelicals who happen--this year--to be looking favorably at Senator Obama's holistic Christian-based world view. Unlike Dobson they like Obama's theology just fine.

11. "Madam, that is not enough. I need a majority."
Adlai Stevenson's response to, "Governor, every thinking person will be voting for you."

And my response to, "The true believers in the teachings of Jesus will NOT vote for..."

There are, indeed, Christians who model their lives and philosophies on the teachings of Jesus (:applause:) but if they represented anything like a voting majority we wouldn't have had Bush in office for even one term -- certainly not for two.

12. I really like Jim Wallis
I have always thought he was a valuable voice in our church-state political discussion. I heard him speak a few years ago at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Tacoma and was very impressed.
