Sleaze scuppers Democrat golden boy
Gotcha: Senator John Edwards, whose wife has cancer, has been caught in a sex scandal that ends his vice-presidential hopes

SCRATCH John Edwards off the list of potential vice-presidential candidates. The former White House contender, who had been hoping to get the nod from Barack Obama, is in the midst of a full-blown sex scandal.

Every supermarket shopper knows that the preternaturally youthful former senator for North Carolina may have fathered a love child with a film-maker while Elizabeth, his saintly wife, is dying of cancer. There are sensational new details on the National Enquirer website, although most of the media have done their best to ignore them.

The tabloid magazine cornered Edwards, 55, leaving a Los Angeles hotel where Rielle Hunter, his alleged mistress, and her baby were staying, at 2.40am last Tuesday. He ran down a hallway and dived into the men’s bathroom. A hotel security guard confirmed the encounter. “His face just went totally white,” the guard said.

The story has been bubbling away for months, but so far there has been not a word about it in the mainstream newspapers, even though Edwards was John Kerry’s running mate in 2004 and has been tipped for a prominent job in an Obama administration – if not vice-president, then attorney-general or antipoverty tsar.

15. Parroting.......John Edwards admits to lying about affair
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 09:42 AM by emad
John Edwards, the former Democratic presidential candidate, admitted last night he lied by denying an affair with a former aide while his chief fundraiser conceded that he had given money to the woman, who has remained silent

Mr Edwards, 55, a father of three whose wife Elizabeth has terminal cancer, was recently caught by the National Enquirer magazine secretly visiting Rielle Hunter, 44, and her six-month-old baby Frances Quinn Hunter at a Beverly Hills hotel. This week, photographs of him holding the baby girl were published.

The bombshell could be a damaging distraction for Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, whom Mr Edwards endorsed amid much fanfare in May. Mr Obama was on his campaign plane bound for Hawaii and a week's holiday when the news broke four hours before he was expected to land.

In a detailed prepared statement, the former North Carolina senator said that during his political campaigns "I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic".

He added: "If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help."

Lying & confidence....
SNIP:
David Bonior, who managed Edwards' latest presidential campaign, said the former North Carolina senator had "betrayed" his supporters.

"Thousands of friends of the senators and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him and he's let them down," Bonior told the Associated Press.

Asked if the scandal would finish Edwards' political career, Bonior replied: "You can't lie in politics and expect to have people's confidence"

7. I'm afraid there is some truth here
The fact that Edwards hasn't completely denied it is concerning.

9. My goodness! Is that yet another Times article by Sarah Baxter of "Democrats for Bush" fame?
Why! so it is!

We should all be proud of Sarah: after years of effort, she has climbed up the journalistic ladder to a new height: rewriting National Enquirer stories for Murdoch!

And her language is so descriptive: who else would have written a sentence like, The story has been bubbling away for months? It so accurately brings to mind the image of Sarah herself who, like a little rightwing geyser, cheerfully spews steaming fetid sewage at regular intervals

Oh! and such craft! Note how the following sentence is buried in the second half of her "story," nowhere near the top and not uncomfortably close to the end either: Hunter .. claimed that Andrew Young .. was the father of her child. Young’s lawyer acknowledged his paternity

11. Such a small detail, isn't it? Hardly worth MENTIONING.
Thanks for taking the time to read it, and to illuminate the point. I often get so steamed I just don't want to read it. As I've seen proven again and again by the DU'ers I respect, very often if you just dive in and examine the crap they're pushing, you'll see something which can unravel the whole trashy piece!

Now THAT'S a good catch! Congrats! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Sarah, bite us!

12. Sarah first came to my attention several years back, when she wrote
a little "report" quoting remarks person X made with politician Y in country Z: unfortunately, as it turned out, one could very easily verify that, although politician Y WAS (not surprisingly) in country Z (since Y lived there), person X (who did not live there) was thousands of miles away at the time, doing something else in a completely different country. The Times excuse was then (if I recall correctly), that Sarah had heard this story from some unnamed source and so naturally repeated it

In any case, I somehow obtained a lingering impression, that Sarah might haves a talent for repeating stories she hears, a talent which certain interest groups might find very useful -- as well as another impression that she could have somewhat less talent for digging out actual facts. This most recent exercise, in which she shows her skill at reciting from the National Enquirer, does not much change those impressions
