Todd Palin thumbs his nose at the law
Todd Palin thumbs his nose at the law

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

The Sarah Palin bump is over in the polls for GOP running mate John McCain. Now husband Todd Palin has decided he's above the law. This is not good news for Republicans fighting to attract independent votes in November's presidential race.

Todd Palin says he will refuse to obey a subpoena from an independent investigator for the state legislature in Alaska. The reason: Palin claims he's too busy out on the campaign trail. What a limp excuse.

The investigation centers on whether Sarah Palin or her staff abused their powers when Palin, as governor, fired her public safety commissioner.

Critics say it was because he failed to get rid of a state trooper who was involved in a nasty divorce from Palin's sister.

1. EVERY ONE of them
are thumbing their noses! I just don't understand how they can impede the investigation like this with no outcry!

2. I don't understand how people are allowed to get away with this. Is there no penalty
for refusing to honor a subpoena?

6. They can do it...
because our cowardly representatives (Pelosi, Reid, et al) let them. They set the precedent with Miers, Bolton, and Rove and now any Republican criminal thinks he can get away with murder, because, hey, the Dems will let it slide. We don't want to be rude or something. This was all just a big misunderstanding.

It makes me sick that this is the best we have at the moment in Congress and I sure hope things change after the election. Pelosi and Reid need to be tarred and feathered and then run out of D.C. There are no adequate words to describe the level of disgust I feel when I see them.

7. I understand how you feel
But I'd like to remind everyone that the congress has very little actual power anymore, due to the weakening of the 3 arms of government under the Bush admin. We have no checks and balances in play, when congress can subpoena people and have them ignore the subpoena. The DoJ then would step in, but it has been staffed with fundy GOPPERS (illegally) who have an agenda which contradicts the purpose of the DoJ.

I applaud and revere the courage of Dems such as Kucinich who stand up daily for the constitution. We deserve to have a congress full of them. That is the oath they all take, after all. But I also think it is overly-simplistic to assume that things aren't happening because of Pelosi et al's failures. Not only have they been severely handicapped by the GOP in ways we don't want to admit because it implies that our government is dead (and they don't want to admit either), but I have also long suspected she was being blackmailed (as per usual the DoJ spending tax payer money to investigate Dems esp during election years). I hope I am wrong; However I have been recently been warned that there is an ugly surprise coming out about her. The list of Dems who were blackmailed and had their careers ruined over standing up to the GOP is long and sad. many of them were "investigated" long enough to ruin their careers, only to have said investigation forgotten about after it had been "leaked" to the press by anonymous sources.

8. As I understand it...
the Sergeant at Arms can circumvent the DoJ and arrest these people and drag them in for testimony. If that is the case then why aren't they doing it? I have also asked myself why Pelosi avoids the subject and whether she is simply complicit or if they have something on her. If it's the latter, then she really needs to step down and make way for someone with a clean vest for the sake of the country. It's not like she is going to starve or something. The Bush administration has committed real crimes and they just laugh at Democrats because they know they will be able to continue to get away with them. As a matter of fact they are emboldened by the inaction of the Democrats. I, too, wish we had more Wexlers and Kuciniches in Congress. I would have loved to see Kucinich in the White House but, sadly, the U.S. isn't evolved enough for someone of his calibre.

4. Isn't it odd that Todd Palin can walk away from a subpoena because he's 'busy' but Bill Clinton,

I wish the media would spend less time on Palin and more on
McCain.

10. Spending time on Palin *is* spending time on McCain.
His choosing her as VP was reckless, cynical, and irresponsible - qualities of his that we would see regularly should he become president. His first major-league decision and he blew it, big time.

When McCain dies in office, it's America that will be placed on the highway to Hell.

11. A couple of deputies need to be sent over there to gently, but persuasively,
shove that subpoena right up Toddster's campaigning ass.
