Eric Boehlert: Joe Biden and the press: A case study in the absurd
Joe Biden and the press: A case study in the absurd

by Eric Boehlert

Authenticity and access, that's what the campaign press corps craves.

Election scribes claim they long for candidates who venture off-script and are confident enough to reveal themselves on the campaign trail, to say what they really think instead of hiding behind consultant-approved sound bites. (The press, we're told, hates phonies.)

And, of course, the press prizes access to candidates in hopes of uncovering that authenticity, in hopes of tapping the candidate's true personality. The two -- authenticity and access -- are the cornerstones of the press' campaign pursuit.

So when Sen. Joe Biden was tapped as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, it should have been a press dream, right? Biden immediately swung open his doors to the press. And as he's done for years, he showed no hesitation in flashing signs of a caution-be-damned approach on the campaign trail. Forever comfortable in his own skin and representing something of a throwback to the era of garrulous Irish-Catholic pols who loved the art of conversation, Biden seemed to revel in his off-the-cuffs moments with voters and reporters.

And yes, sometimes that meant Biden became tongue-tied and made gaffes and had to walk back comments. But for reporters, Biden's approach sure seemed better than covering the type of play-it-safe candidates they regularly complain about. (I'm picturing Mitt Romney ... )

If anything, grateful reporters should have rewarded Biden's wide-open style (not to mention his generous access), right?

Wrong. Throughout the fall campaign, the press relentlessly painted Biden as a buffoon and a goof. Rather than reward Biden for being open and honest with voters, the press punished him for weeks on end.

The irony was thick. The media loved pushing the Biden-says-nutty-things narrative. Yet the press whines incessantly about how scripted candidates are and that their interaction with voters out on the trail is phony and contrived. They complain about how the candidates aren't entertaining enough, as if that's their job.

Obama "can be sort of a bore" was a typical, he's-not-amusing-us complaint from a Los Angeles Times reporter. "He's {campaigned} with dogged professionalism, but with little show of spontaneity."

But when Biden came along and communicated spontaneously -- authentically -- on the campaign trail and routinely ventured off-script (and yes, said some unexpected and unintentionally humorous things), what did the press do?

The press mocked the candidate for not being scripted enough.

1. All true, plus no respect for the differences he made in FL, PA and OH.
And elsewhere as the likable, ready to president VP.

2. I think he was a great pick, and like Biden even more now than
I did. He is a definite plus and was a great Democratic cheerleader we could all look up to.

3. "And when the stock market crashed
Roosevelt when on TV and......." I hope he learns to embrace that one because nobody is going to let him forget it.

4. What a waste.
Whenever Biden speaks, I learn new things, i understand issues better, and I feel as though he's giving us the most recent updates. (For example, after Bhutto's assisanation, we learned more from Biden, and sooner than the WH or MSM offered us.)

if people would listen to what he has to say, they'd be the better for it, yet it's the 'gaffes' that get all the play. Well, it's their loss and I'll continue to listen to -- and learn from -- Biden.

still love Joe the Biden, more so than ever. He wouldn't be Joe if he couldn't "be joe".

6. came across this gem just now...
In NYT in an otherwise charming account of Biden making phone calls with volunteers in FL, they use the phrase
"to his last telephonic victim"

Well, winning is the best revenge I guess.

8. I've been thinking what this article says.....
They other side of Biden's "gaffes" is that he's direct and honest.

9. Excellent article
Joe Biden really hasn't gotten nearly the recognition he deserves and all the "gaffe" crap has been ridiculous. He has earned far more respect than he's gotten.

11. I agree with the column, last night Jay Leno

laments the fact that Bush's term is coming to an end and this will leave the comedians with a lack of joke material as they can't find anything about Obama to make fun of, then he says but Vice-President Biden will make up for it!

Regarding this paragraph, I would only add to paragraph below, Biden's coverage in general was virtually non-existent compared to Palin. Just for the record, for those who don't know history Palin wasn't the first female V.P. running mate Ferraro was, so in this respect I believe the "Palin Effect" was in large part a corporate media construct in an attempt to get McCain elected. Had this been 2000, they may have gotten away with it but after eight years of corrupt/incompetence, the few interviews she held were too radioactive for even some in the corporate media to stomach.

"According to a media survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, "Biden's coverage was among the most negative of any candidate studied, more so than Palin's and close to McCain's. Excluding the week of the vice presidential debate, 48% of Biden stories carried a clear negative tone. Another 35% were neutral or mixed. Just 17% were positive."

Thanks for the thread, babylonsister.

Kicked and recommended.

13. good article
good article. I'm sick of the cartoons making Biden out to be a fool with his foot in his mouth cause from everything I know about him that's as far from the truth as it comes. Especially compared to his VP opponent.

I got to see Biden speak last week, and it was a very worthwhile experience. I like how he never forgets his roots and still is an ordinary guy.

14. Joe is an excellent choice for VP
Joe has the respect of people that work with him AND his constituents. He is a very smart capable man who is trustworthy and sincere. It will be such a change to see someone of his caliber in the VP slot now. Barack only surrounds himself with people like himself.Intelligent, determined people with integrity. Wow. It has been a long time since we could use those words to describe the President and VP hasn't it?
