Bailout for Focus on the Family?
James Dobson’s Focus on the Family is going to be begging for a bailout soon, and just announced the layoffs of 20% of their work force. Who is in favor of bailing them out? What would your conditions be? Come on, folks, the citizens of Colorado Springs need some help here when its major industry of hate starts tanking.

2. Surely this will ruin
the economy of Colorado Springs, though. Maybe they could auction of Dobson to the highest bidder or something to save jobs.

7. There's the first condition for reorganization
Perhaps change the mission of Focus on the Family also?

Eliminate any political lobbying, perhaps? Could we demand more concessions in return for a bailout?

9. I think for a bail out they
should be given an ocean liner. with a hole in the hull and a tablespoon. They can bail themselves out.

I'd love to see nonhating Christians run those things. I've nothing against a welcoming sort of Christianity, after all.

4. The government gives them a financial break every day.
It's called their 501(c)(3) status. How they are able to keep it is beyond me.

that this is all just another scam to squeeze money out of their deluded flock. Just another form of bailout.

The largest employer AND the largest property owner in Lynchburg, Virginia is the Jerry Falwell ministries (Thomas Road Baptist Church, Liberty University, etc.).

If that organization were in dire financial straits and its demise were to have a very negative impact not only on Lynchberg, but also Campbell County, maybe the region, would that justify our tax dollars being used to promote discrmination against gays, other religions, feminists, etc.?

Or if half the Roman Catholic parochial schools were to close if they didn't get a cash infusion ASAP, would that be reason enough to give them tax dollars?

if the bailout were to oust everyone in charge there, and change the principles under which they are run. . . just as the bailout terms might be formulated for GM?

the Citizens of Colorado Springs have proven they don't DESERVE a bailout, for fostering such a hatemongering group.

21. Not just no, but HELL, NO
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 11:14 AM by Rob H.
They did their damnedest (no pun intended) to not only prop up der Shrubbenführer, but to try to help elect someone who would continue his disastrous policies. I feel sorry for the people who are losing their jobs--I got laid off a couple of years ago, and it sucks no matter who your employer is--but they're finally paying the price for having supported a President who dragged our economy into the toilet. And then there's this delicious bit of irony (emphasis added):

Focus on the Family is poised to announce major layoffs to its Colorado Springs-based ministry and media empire today. The cutbacks come just weeks after the group pumped more than half a million dollars into the successful effort to pass a gay-marriage ban in California.

They stuck their noses in where they didn't belong, sank a lot of money into the effort, and even though Prop 8 passed, they crippled their "ministry" on their own. Maybe if they'd minded their own fucking business they wouldn't be in the situation they're in now.

25. We citizens of Jesusland....
... (aka - Colorado Springs) know that if Dobson's pathetic little hate factory did go under, the city will carry on much as before.

With five military bases located around this town, the huge amount of federal (i.e. - welfare) cash flowing in means there is no sign whatsoever of Bush's recession here.

So goodbye and good riddance Focus? We live in hope....
