NY elementary school is renamed for Obama
http://www.mercurynews.com/nationworld/ci_11041978

It was only a matter of time. A New York school has been renamed in honor of President-elect Barack Obama.

The former Ludlum Elementary School, in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District, was renamed at a school board meeting Thursday—effective immediately.

School officials say most of the 440 students there are black or Hispanic, and Obama's victory is a source of great pride.

2. As much as I would be tempted to make an exception for
President-elect Obama, I do not think public buildings should be named for politicians until they have been dead for a reasonable period of time, say 25 or 50 years.

At a meeting Thursday night, the five-member Hempstead school board voted unanimously to rename one of its schools Barack Obama Elementary School, said Superintendent Joseph Laria.

The change was effective immediately, although the district does not have a new sign yet. The school, formerly called Ludlum Elementary School, is on William Street in Hempstead.

School staff and students, who participated in mock presidential and vice presidential debates before the Nov. 4 election, initiated the request to rename the school, Laria said.
