Citigroup to hire 1,000 workers in Philippines
By Manila Bureau
Last update: 9:21 p.m. EST Nov. 23, 2008

MANILA (MarketWatch) -- Citigroup Inc.
plans to expand and hire 1,000 more workers in the Philippines next year despite the thousands of jobs it plans to cut overseas, the Manila Standard Today newspaper reported Monday.
"We're investing in systems and processes, and next year we will have another 1,000 (workers)," Citigroup's country business manager Mark Jones was quoted as saying.
He added that the new jobs to be created in the Philippines would be for Citigroup's call center and financial reporting operations.
"There's a whole lot of activity moving in the Philippines as we grow our businesses. Citi is moving more equity in the Philippines. If you look at the business, we're repositioning globally," Jones said.

2. I'm sick of having my customer service calls answered by someone in the far east.
When the company is supposed to be an American one.

Global community my ass.

This shit has got to stop.

4. This would be akin to...
...the Big Three announcing a new plant opening in Mexico on the day they went to Congress to ask for American taxpayer money.

8. K & R. And guess what?
The right wing media will use this to argue that corporate tax rates are too high, and that companies have no choice but to send these jobs overseas.

Never mind the record number of jobs shipped away from 1998-2005, the period of time when 2/3 of US corporations paid NO TAXES according to the non-partisan GAO.

GAO: Most U.S. Corps. Don't Pay Income Tax

GAO: Trillions In Sales Untaxed For Years

7:34 am EDT August 12, 2008

WASHINGTON -- The Government Accountability Office is set to release a report that says most U.S. corporations pay no federal income taxes.

And most foreign companies that do business in the United States aren't paying corporate taxes.

The study says about two-thirds of American corporations paid zero income taxes to Uncle Sam between 1998 and 2005.

An even higher percentage of foreign corporations avoided federal corporate taxes. At the same time, said the GAO, the firms had trillions of dollars in sales.

The study was requested by Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota.

"It's shameful that so many corporations make big profits and pay nothing to support our country," Dorgan said.

The report doesn't name names, and the congressional agency didn't investigate why corporations aren't paying corporate or income taxes. But the GAO said it could be because of operating losses and tax credits.

14. I just had to share this...
*****

Two Indians have signed to play with a US Major League baseball team after winning a talent contest for pitching.

The professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates is the first for any Indian nationals.

...

The team's general manager, Neal Huntington, told the Associated Press news agency that by signing up the two Indians the team hoped to "open a pathway to an untapped market".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7747553.stm

*****

Not entirely relevant I know, but it made me chuckle for the irony of the bolded statement above in light of our discussions here.
