Nuts to the New “War on Thanksgiving”
Some Right Wing Pundit Gone Wild over there at NRO, has decided to whine about Thanksgiving because an article in the WaPo didn’t gush enough about the excess of the holiday. I’ll be eating well, and even watching football, but I’ll also be raising money and giving a big check to someone in emergency need. That’s the spirit of the holiday.

1. Used to be a common harvest festival
in Europe, celebrating the end of hard work for the year, and enjoying the fruits of that labor.

2. "But increasingly we are being told that it is a time to observe limits."

"But the whole point of the holiday is to do that which is unsustainable."

This seems to be the crux of the blogger's complaint: limits are bad, and observing limits is anti-American.

I hate to say it, but that does explain quite about about America's position in the world today.

5. The point they're always missing is that the Puritans would have put to death
anyone celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas. The fundies wouldn't have lasted very long with these heathen observances in Plymouth.

6. Umm, but
Didn't the Puritans celebrate the first Thanksgiving? OK, there wasn't a parade with big balloons, but they did celebrate it, right?

7. the Mayflower Pilgrims were not Puritans
They were Separatists. They drank alcohol, danced, owned brilliant-colored clothes. Tradition has portrayed the Pilgrims wrong. The Puritans came later.
