ALAN MACKINNON

Obama is on record as opposing the Trident replacement warhead. Now is the time to act, argues ALAN MACKINNON.

PROGRESS towards a nuclear-free world would require US President Barack Obama to halt any new nuclear weapons programme at home or abroad that could destabilise the existing strategic balance.

Obama is on record as opposing the reliable replacement warhead (RRW), which is intended for Trident.

He could start to act on that opposition with Britain.

Last month, the British government quietly sold off its one-third share of AWE Aldermaston, the company that runs Britain's nuclear bomb factory, to the US company Jacobs Engineering.

The management company is now two-thirds owned by private US companies. Lockheed Martin owns another third and the British services company Serco owns the last third.

There is good reason to believe, despite official denials, that scientists at Aldermaston have been working on a new warhead for Trident for around two years.

1. Halting this program could save us some money that we could
rerout to some hospitals that are having trouble with the amount of free care they are finding themselves having to provide, and so they are cutting their staff. This has got to be turned around, and we have been at war long enough. Time for peace.
